Smear Layer Outcome on Healing

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: AD1012743 | Open PDF

Abstract:

The mechanical process of shaping the root canal creates a layer of organic and inorganic debris, termed the smear layer. This layer can be removed using a combination of ethylene-diamine-tetraacetic-acid EDTA and sodium hypochlorite NaOCI. Smear layer removal is not the standard of care and its removal is debated. Currently, there are limited in-vivo endodontic outcome studies to aid the clinicians decision in the removal of the smear layer prior to obturation.
