Abstract:

The requirements for surveillance, navigation, and collision avoidance by hydrofoils, air-cushion vehicles, and surface-effects ships in the 1980s are analyzed. The radar systems to perform these functions which are presently installed or planned for installation are assessed and problem areas identified. Design and development approaches for new equipments are suggested, including a dual antenna configuration using a single processing system and two antennas one with a 360-degree aspect, the other with a selectable sector scan capability and a single antenna configuration using either a circular-array electronic scan antenna or a phased-array antenna.
