Abstract:

The purpose of the 1000 Megabit Per Second Pulse Gated Binary Modulation 1000 Mbs PGBM laser transceiver electronics was to design, develop, and test transmitter and receiver electronics suitable for use in a 1000 Mbs PGBM Mode-locked Laser Communication System. The hardware was developed with the following primary objectives 1 The system will handle either two 500 Mbs channels of synchronous input data or three channels 492 Mbs, 246 Mbs, and 246 Mbs of asynchronous data 2 The data reconstruction circuitry is capable of near optimum detection of Poisson modulated 1000 Mbs return-to-zero rz data 3 An optical link simulator is provided for the electronics transceiver test 4 High speed data sources and error detectors are included for system performance measurements. The approach in the development of this hardware was to utilize a versatile line of previously developed high speed, low power hybrid circuitry in the design of all essential components. The circuit design and layout was organized such that the system feasibility for future flight usage was well demonstrated as was future expansion capability. When tested with the optical link simulator and additive Gaussian noise, the transceiver bit error rate performance was 1.5 dB from theoretical for both synchronous and asynchronous modes of operation.
