Product Improvement Test of Quadrant Sight for the M203 Grenade Launcher.

The purpose of the test was to evaluate a product-improved quadrant sight for the M203 grenade launcher. Testing was conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 17 November to 11 December 1970. The sight was inspected for physical characteristics, fired for accuracy, and subjected to high and low temperatures, and to ruggedness and lubricants and solvents compatibility tests. No deficiencies were encountered four shortcomings, however, were experienced. Three shortcomings were similar to shortcomings on the present standard quadrant sight. It was concluded that over-all performance of the test sight was equal to that of the standard sight and that neither was correctly calibrated to impact greandes at the 300- and 375-meter ranges when using ammunition with a velocity level in the lower limit of acceptability for the M203 grenade launcher. It was recommended that action be taken to produce ammunition with a velocity level of 245 or - 5 fps from the M203 launcher or that the sight test or standard be recalibrated for 40-mm ammunition in the lower limit of allowable velocity acceptability 235 fps.
