Conductive, Lusterless Coatings for Light Metals.

Abstract:

Four proposed coating systems were examined to select the best candidate for a lusterless, conductive coating on light metals. A two-layer system consisting of 0.8 mil of Watts-type nickel and 0.8 or 1.0 mil of porous nickel complied with the technical requirements. Porosity in the second layer was induced by adding colloidal graphite to the plating bath. A new technical requirement was added during the program, which limited the color contrast between abraded and unabraded surfaces. All technical requirements including the low color contrast were satisfied when the outer layer was deposited in a nickel-plating bath containing suspended activated-carbon particles with the pH of the solution adjusted to about 2.0.
