Abstract:

Analytical and experimental results are reported on the desirability of short pulse, direct detection visible and near-IR laser communication systems. Data regimes from 10 to the 6th power to 10 to the 9th power bitssec were investigated for four laser formats - two binary formats and two M-ary formats. Comparisons with other formats including analog and CW systems are included. Experimental results verified analytical results, demonstrating background discrimination capability of short pulse techniques and the capability to efficiently convey information. In the M-ary experiments as many as 12 bitspulse were transmitted using 4095 digitally selected one nanosecond time slots. High quality TV pictures were transmitted at average detected signal to background ratios less than 0.01. 200 Mbps binary experiments were also conducted. Author
