Abstract:

This is the final report of a study of techniques for high tonal quality picture transmission, as specified by the Mallard Task Directive TD. 13. The usefulness of a picture as a function of resolution and the gamma of the photographic paper has been investigated from a photointerpreters view. While gamma was found to have no effect if extreme values were excluded, the usefulness fell as the inverse square root of the resolution in the region of most interest. Methods of transmitting the picture by digital means have been explored. For economy of transmission time and minimal effect of errors in the bit stream, HIDM and GEC Mk 3 variants of normal delta modulation were found to be equal in performance and superior to all the other methods of digital modulation investigated. A survey has been made of methods of scanning photographs and of reproducing them at the receiver. Subjects for further investigation are suggested.
