Lightweight Surveillance Radar AN/PPS-9.
Abstract:
During the reporting period, the ANPPS-9 Engineering Model was assembled in an open frame for subsystem test. After testing had begun, noise problems were encountered. Testing was then concentrated on subsystems and subunits in order to isolate noise sources and proceed with corrective action. Modifications to the wiring harness and the DCDC Converter contributed only minor improvements in the SN measurement. Suspicion then centered on the avalanche diode source and the hot carrier diode mixer the latter was exonerated through testing. Difficulty was encountered in obtaining a CW source to substitute for the avalanche diode due to the required source SN. The RCA Microwave Advanced Research group at the RCA Princeton Laboratories provided a TEO Transfer Electron Oscillator or Gunn diode which was placed in a modified avalanche diode cavity and tested. The results demonstrated that the avalanche diode was the major noise contributor. Radar results using the TEO were encouraging. Additional TEOs are now being procured, and an optimum cavity and TEO power supply module are being designed and fabricated.
