Maximizing Moving Target Indicator (MTI) Performance in a Helicopter-Borne Radar.
Abstract:
The report describes the effect of radar platform motion on the frequency spectrum of the received radar signal. The problem of Doppler frequency smear caused by platform motion scanning modulation, ground winds, etc. for a helicopter-borne L-band surveillance radar is discussed. The radar uses a moving target indicator mode MTI to discriminate between the received signal energy which is at a frequency reflecting the Doppler shift caused by the target and the energy which has been reflected by the background area. The report specifically addresses itself to the analyses of the frequency content of the received signal by digital computer processes and how the low frequency cutoff point of the MTI filter can be selected such that maximum probability of detecting a target results.
