Graphite Fiber Reinforced Composites.
Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to develop a process for inproving the interlaminar shear properties of graphite-resin composites. Various methods of treating graphite yarn and fiber surfaces to produce interactions with resin matrix materials were studied. Interlaminar shear properties of Thornel 40 graphite fiber reinforced composites have been improved at least twofold, and in some cases almost threefold, by a process wherein the fiber is heat-treated under defined conditions of time, temperature and atmosphere. The heat-treating operation on the fiber results in at least a 70-75 retention of the tensile strength of the fiber. Author, modified-PL.
