Abstract:

The equipment was designed and fabricated to provide a Vertical Situation Display VSD for a VTOL simulator. It consists of an Indicator Unit containing a 12-inch diagonal CRT which may be mounted in the simulator cockpit and a floor-mounted cabinet which contains all function generating circuitry, power supplies, etc. The display was designed to provide information, required for flying the simulator, in the form of various numeric tapes and proportional cues. These display elements are all generated electronically, with the exception of roll which is provided by a servo driven yoke, for display on a standard TV raster. Switches on the front panel may be used to blank any desired combination of the electronically generated display elements. This should permit great flexibility in experimental human factors work. Space is available for circuit expansion of approximately twenty percent. Commercial monitors may be used to provide additional remote displays less roll, since a TV raster has been utilized. The VSD should, therefore, be a good quality and flexible tool for simulator experimental work. Author
