60-WATT LIQUID HYDRAZINE FUEL CELL.
Abstract:
Storage batteries that supply power to tactical communication and surveillance equipment quickly exhaust their energy. A 60-watt fuel cell using liquid hydrazine as the active material for oxidation is being developed as part of a fuel cell-battery hybrid. In this system, the storage battery provides the high peak power pulses required, and the companion fuel cell converts chemical energy to electric energy at a constant rate, silently recharging the battery. Exploratory development models have supplied 28-, 14-, and 7-volt current at 60 watts for over 450 hours. Advanced models are expected to perform for periods up to 750 hours and be more compact and reliable than those currently being tested. Author
