Abstract:

Phase relationships in the binary system Cr-Si have been established based on the melting point, X-ray, metallographic, and DTA studies. The three intermediate phases Cr3Si, Cr5Si3, and CrSi2 melt congruently at 1770 plus or minus 10 degrees, 1680 plus or minus 20 degrees, and 1490 plus or minus 20C respectively, while the fourth intermediate phase, CrSi, melts peritectically at 1413 plus or minus 5C to Cr5Si3 and a melt containing 51 atomic Si. Based mainly on DTA and metallographic results, the second intermediate phase Cr5Si3 was found to undergo a phase transformation at 1505 plus or minus 20C. The high-temperature form of this phase was never retained by various quenching techniques used in the present study. Author
