PROCESS DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE, CLOSE TOLERANCE FORGINGS OF NICKEL BASE SUPERALLOYS.
Abstract:
The development of a forging practice for close tolerance structural forgings of Rene 41 and Udimet 700 was conducted and is described. Two shapes were experimentally produced in either alloy. One shape had a plan view of 46 square inches, weighed 25 pounds and was hammer forged. The second had a plan view of 133 square inches, weighed 65 pounds and was forged on an hydraulic press. To attain the thin webs and low draft angles 2-3 degrees, heavier forging pressures and insulated forgings were employed. On the hydraulic press forging of Rene 41, a web thickness of 14 in. and rail height of 2 in. was obtained. Less shape sophistication was obtained for Udimet 700. It was demonstrated that more refined shapes could be forged if still heavier forging pressures were feasible. Die breakage presents the most significant limit to potential shape sophistication. Mechanical properties were evaluated and generally satisfy the initial specifications issued for disk forgings in the same alloys. Author
