Abstract:

Several metals and alloys were examined for reinforcement with alpha SiC whiskers. High-temperature matrices were found to degrade the whiskers significantly. Aluminum-silicon alloys and magnesium and its alloys were found compatible at up to their respective solidus temperatures. Hypoeutectic aluminum-silicon alloy composites were investigated in detail. A linear relationship between whisker loading up to about 35 vo tensile strength was established with reproducible consistency in aluminum -2.5 wo silicon matrix composites. Classified 60 mesh-length whiskers and 10 microns matrix powder yielded notably higher tensile properties. At 38 vo, tensile strengths of 68,000 psi were obtained. In 25 vo whisker composites, strengths of about 13,000 psi at 500 C were recorded consistently. Heat treatable aluminum alloy composites yielded erratic results due to an uncontrolled aging response of the matrix during conventional heat treatments. Author
