Abstract:

A review of the scope of the development program, the approach being followed, and the work accomplished during the first four quarters toward the development of stabistor diode charge control systems for spacecraft batteries is presented. A simplified but versatile sensing and control circuit was developed to control the charge current in relation to stabistor diode temperature. Initial 90 minute cycling at 25 C was accomplished using the circuit and 12 AH nickel-cadmium sealed spacecraft cells protected by stabistors. Charge voltage measurements were made on silver-zinc sealed spacecraft cells at 25 C. The forward voltages of 60 to 160 mil square stabistor diodes were characterized with respect to junction size. A method of using the diode as an isolated by high impedance charge control element for a cell was tested and found to be moderately effective over a temperature range from 0 to 50 C. Author
