GASEOUS ION LASER RESEARCH.
Abstract:
Progress is reported on a program to improve the lifetime, reliability, and operational characteristics of high power ion lasers. Life test data on oxide and impregnated tungsten cathodes are presented. Long term gas pressure characteristics of quartz bore tubes are given. A segmented bore tube has been fabricated of graphite segments overcoated with tungsten. The performance of a laser with a segmented bore made of thin disks separated by large gaps is described. The replacement of the solenoid by periodic permanent magnets is discussed and the theory, limitations, and design tradeoffs of permanent magnet structures are reviewed. Laser performance using a periodic permanent magnet field is compared with that using a conventional solenoidal field. Author
