REAL TIME BEAM STEERING.
Abstract:
The basic phased array radar without real-time delay steering has a performance degradation due to the signal propagation time across the array. To eliminate the propagation time effects, a method of stepped IF real-time delays was studied. The performance of a 90 element linear array was both predicted and measured with and without the real-time delay compensation for pulse durations short, with respect to the array propagation time. System signal degradation is shown to be reduced from greater than 100 percent without real-time steering to less than 5 percent, with real-time steering. A theory of array short pulse performance is also developed with recommendations for further study in this area. Author
