Abstract:

This report is concerned with the application of superconducting quantum interference devices SQUIDs to measurement of magnetic fields. A brief description of superconducting loop interferometers is presented without invoking the phenomenon of Josephson tunneling. A simplified derivation of the SQUID transfer function is followed by analytical description of superconducting flux concentrators which are proposed for sensitivity enhancement. Noise fluctuations in thin-film bridges, used as weak-link junctions, are postulated and basic relationships are developed between the time correlation function for bridge voltage fluctuations and the space correlation function for vortex number density. Consideration is given to the dynamics of vortex motion and the results are used to derive a practical expression for noise spectral intensity. The use of two SQUIDs to implement a gradiometer is discussed along with frequency response and noise characteristics of a servo-type magnetometer. Author
