Abstract:

A comparative study was made of two consumable arc melting techniques for the production of super alloy ingots. One technique utilized a vacuum atmosphere and the other a partial pressure of argon. The argon atmosphere allowed a low arc current to be maintained for hot topping while the vacuum atmosphere would not support a stable low current arc. Greater ingot yields were therefore recovered with the argon technique because a smaller shrinkage cavity was produced. Chemical analyses and tensile data of the two techniques were similar.
