MELTING OF POLYMERS,
Abstract:
This report presents a general discussion of polymer melting. Equilibrium crystals of polymers in the form of extended chain crystals are found to follow equilibrium thermodynamics only when heated slowly. On faster experimentation superheating results. Most polymer crystals are metastable folded chain crystals which reorganize badly on heating. Time dependent melting studies are necessary to evaluate the different polymer crystal morphologies. A more detailed discussion of polyethylene, polyoxymethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polycaprolactam is given. Melting point variations are shown to cover as much as 200 C. Author
