Abstract:

The content of this report is a paper presented by Dr. Charles C. Bates to the Society for Exploration Geophysicists at Houston, Texas on 9 November 1966. This paper overviews a number of on-going activities of the U. S. Navy of interest to the seagoing geophysicist. These include the development of a deep-diving series of vehicles equipped with advanced sensors, development of world-wide navigational systems based on doppler satellite and VLF-Omega concepts, experimentation with airborne gravity sensor systems, SEALAB experiments directed towards enhancing the capability of Man-in-the-Sea significant Project MAGNET surveys, automation of cartography and source material retrieval, and rapid detection and verification of major bathymetric features of the sea floor.
