THE BRITTLE FRACTURE OF NON-METALS.

Abstract:

A metallographic study has been made of the room-temperature deformation of Ge, Al2O3, and Tic, using both optical and electron microscopy. Examination of microhardness impressions provides strong evidence that dislocation motion can occur in these materials at room temperature. However, extensive studies of the fracture of Ge bend testpieces indicate that dislocations play no significant role in the fracture process and that failure is completely brittle. Author
