TUNABLE SOLID STATE GENERATOR.
Abstract:
This report summarizes the work done in the development of a 16 GHz solid state power source. In order to accomplish the required power output with a minimum number of stages, it is necessary to utilize a transistor-oscillator multiplier with a power output in excess of 2 W at approximately 1 GHz. This program investigated the use of conventional varactor multipliers, bimode multipliers, step-recovery multipliers, and hyper-abrupt multipliers. Theoretical results clearly indicated that a hyper-abrupt multiplier would yield the greatest efficiency and afford direct multiplication at 1 - 8 GHz without the use of idling circuits. However, the present hyper-abrupt diodes are limited in cutoff frequency to a maximum output frequency of around 5 GHz. The next best approach is to use a broadband varactor doubler followed by a bimode quadrupler to derive power output in the 8 to 10 GHz band. This unit is then followed by a varactor doubler to provide the required output power at Ku-band. A special task was organized in order to develop a pulse FM solid state oscillator at X-band. Key results on this program are listed below. AA 9.8 GHz oscillator has been developed with a power output of 330 mW from a DC source of 6.0 W. Author
