Abstract:

A study was done in the monkey to compare sine wave electroanesthesia EA currents at frequencies ranging from 100 Hz to 10 kHz dual sine wave EA currents at three separation frequencies of 100 Hz, 500 Hz and 1 kHz biased rectangular pulses with a 10 to 20 on time and repetition rates from 30 to 1,000 pulses per second rectangular interburst frequencies of 10 to 20 on time, repetition rates from 50 to 500, with interburst frequencies from 1 kHz to 50 kHz. Each of these waveforms was evaluated in monkeys given no drugs, Midocalm, Droperidol, Sodium Pentathol, Phenobarbital or Atropine. For the levels of drugs used the most consistent physiologic findings were obtained with the barbiturate preanesthetic drugs. For anesthesia, the average value of the 10 on time rectangular pulse was less than the 20 on time pulse. The least amount of average EA current was required for the rectangular interburst pulse currents, the next greatest amount for biased rectangular pulses, followed by the single sine wave and double sine wave currents.
