Abstract:

Heavy rainfalls with daily totals of 30 mm or more appear to be a changeable characteristic of precipitation in the Carpathian Mountains. The principal cause of their variability is the result of orographic factors and large fluctuations in atmospheric conditions from year to year. During warm seasons heavy rainfalls occur yearly in the Carpathians. Where orographic factors are conducive to the formation of heavy rains, they are 2 to 3 times more frequent than in less hilly places with milder conditions. In the course of the warm seasons over 23 years in the regions of 19 meteorological stations, about 800 rainfalls were registered.
