Abstract:

The study discusses the distribution of the anti-cancer drug, cyclophosphamide in a laboratory rat - constructing a two compartment pharmacokinetic model. The use of non-linear terms in the models equations represents a significant departure from the norm of linearity, which is also too often assumed at the expense of mathematical accuracy. A series of four non-linear coupled equations are set forth, which completely describe the two compartment model. The parameters used in the equations are then listed, accompanied by an explanation of each specific derivation. Numerical solutions to the model equations are produced on the digital computer and presented as concentration versus time plots for the cyclophosphamide and its primary metabolites. These results are substantiated by actual experimental data which verifies the validity of the model. Finally, possible applications of the two compartment model are discussed in order to demonstrate its usefulness. Modified author abstract
