Abstract:

Operational and maintenance problems have been reported from the field on the caliber .50 machine gun, M85. Redesign studies and initial firing tests of improved components indicate that, while some problems are inherent in the basic design, most can be eliminated or significantly decreased by design and material changes and proper operating procedures.
