Abstract:

A structure of periodically growing and decaying laminar boundary layers is postulated for the sublayer in turbulent flow. The external flow for these sublayer boundary layers is the inner portion of the turbulent boundary layer. After growing to a characteristic critical thickness they are swept away and new laminar boundary layers begin growing. Despite the seemingly deterministic nature of the model, it is compatible with the random property of turbulence because there is no preferred location of the pattern of laminar boundary layers upon the solid surface. The pattern will therefore tend to shift about randomly, and the behavior e.g., velocity at a particular point near the surface will appear random. Modified author abstract
