Abstract:

It is shown that analysis of overall buckling or vibration of a ships vee-bottom structure may be represented approximately as a simple two-degree-of-freedom eigenvalue problem. Details are given of an analysis procedure which is readily programmed for a small digital computer. Solutions have been computed for a range of typical vee-bottom structures and results are presented in the form of data-curves from which buckling loads or natural frequencies of vibration may be estimated for most practical systems with sufficient accuracy for initial design purposes. The method of analysis and data curves are particularly relevant to GRP ships, in which overall buckling may occur at stresses well below the material ultimate strength, but are also applicable to steel single-bottom structures.
