Environmental Quality and the U. S. Army.

The quality of the environment has become a matter of concern to the majority of Americans. Recent congressional legislation and executive orders have reemphasized, redefined, and initiated certain requirements which fall within the responsibilities of the Corps of Engineers. The basic question is what actions the Corps of Engineers must initiate to comply with these new directives. Basic data were gathered using a literature search and personal interviews with personnel in the Office, Chief of Engineers. In land and water use, the Corps can make significant contributions to achieving national objectives. In solid waste management and air pollution, the contributions are considerably less because of the smaller role of the Engineers in these areas. Modified author abstract
