Single Crystal Diffraction Patterns from Vitreous Carbon.

Abstract:

Many previous studies of vitreous carbon by x-ray diffraction show broad diffraction maxima typical of vitreous materials. However, electron diffraction studies reveal many regions that give single crystal patterns. Although some of the patterns are of graphite, as expected, many patterns were obtained that correspond to other carbon crystal forms such as chaoite and carbon VI. In addition, ring patterns of lonsdaleite and diamond were found. Finally, patterns were obtained that do not correspond to any of the known carbon allotropes. Author
