'Streptococcus mutans' and the Epidemiology of Dental Caries,

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: AD0776222 | Need Help?

Abstract:

The epidemiology of Streptococcus mutans and its relationship to dental caries was discussed. There are four and possibly five varieties of Strep. mutans. They are universally found in human populations, although there may be strain differences in the populations studied. The organism colonized on childrens teeth when suitable tooth surfaces erupt. In children, as well as in young adults, the occlusal and the approximal sites on teeth are the prime sites for colonization of Strep. mutans. There is increasing evidence developing linking the organism directly with the initiation of dental caries. Author
