Microinch Machining of Optical Components for Infrared Optics.

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: AD0774742 | Need Help?

Abstract:

Single-point diamond knives have been used on precision lathes to machine to microinch tolerances. This micromachining can also produce optics of high quality. The background and organizations involved in micromachining along with capabilities of micromachining optics are discussed. Optical evaluation of micromachined surfaces has been performed including scattering, reflectivity, absorption, and optical figure. Pulsed and continuous wave CW 10.6 micrometers data are presented and discussed. Although most evaluation has been done at 10.6 micrometers, measurements and discussion of possible uses of micromachined mirrors at visible wavelengths are included. Plans for research and development of micromachining are detailed. Author
