Coherent Synchrotron Radiation from an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam.
Abstract:
When an intense relativistic electron beam was made to traverse a a magnetic field of novel configuration, about 25 MW of microwave power was measured in a narrowband pulse delta omegaomega or - 0.6 centered near the relativistic electron cyclotron frequency. The emission angle was almost perpendicular to the applied magnetic field. The measured power is 10 to the 6th power larger than what can be accounted for on the basis of single particle synchrotron radiation. The process is thought to be similar to that previously reported in a low power about 1 W electron cyclotron maser. Author
