Abstract:

Deterioration of the materials used for fill and drift eliminators in the towers investigated to be a result of physical damage and not from erosion or operation effects. The one exception is a tower with aluminum fill which apparently is extremely sensitive to water chemistry and which totally disintegrated within a short period of time. Aluminum fill, however, is not permitted under Specification MIL-C-16278F. Calculated cooling tower deficiencies, obtained from field testing and conversion data, indicate no correlation between age and condition of towers. This correlation can only be made by using test data from previous cooling tower tests. Such information is not available at this time.
