Abstract:

The mathematical formulation of a numerical model of the upper atmosphere is described. The model is three-dimensional nonlinear and is designed for the study of time-dependent as well as steady-state problems. The Galerkin method is sued as an efficient alternative to finite-difference approaches. This allows many parametric calculations to be made with low resolution for a reasonable cost it can also be used for high-resolution studies. The effects of viscosity, ion drag and Coriolis force are included, as well as those of the nonlinear terms in the equations of motion. The present report serves as an introduction to a series of volumes describing calculations made using this model, in which the density, temperature and wind fields are determined in various stages of approximation.
