Abstract:

A pipeline weld radiographic inspection equipment set was developed primarily to provide the military with highly portable equipment for the rapid inspection of welds in petroleum pipelines at the construction site. The equipment consists essentially of a 2-12 ton, trailed-mounted laboratory or darkroom, capable of operation under extreme environmental conditions, for processing of 70-millimeter X-ray film strips, a manually portable, remote-controlled, gamma-ray projector containing 100 curies of Iridium 192 as the source and all ancillary equipment such as stop watches, dosimeters, X-ray exposure calculator, warning signs, expendable supplies, and spare parts required for 15 days operation. The report covers the development program from the beginning of the first prototype through engineer design, engineering tests, service testing, check testing of modifications, and final type classification of the set in December 1970.
