Abstract:

OR, AND IT WAS PURSUED BY A MAJOR AND MINOR INVESTIGATION. The minor investigation was that of a powder phosphor of ZnSMn coated with a copper sulfide layer. These powders were then used in conjunction with a plastic binder to make EL layers. The major effort of this project was on sputtered films of ZnSMnCu. Automated methods of material evaluation were used to determine optimum film composition, and means of obtaining constant composition over wide areas. It was found that current-limiting layers in the form of cermets were necessary to prevent breakdown of the EL films. With these protected EL films the performance from the standpoint of brightness, efficiency, and life has been increased by at least an order of magnitude over the existing state of the art for dc electroluminescent thin films. A test display consisting of a matrix of 7 x 39 x-y addressable cells was fabricated by inexpensive photolithographic techniques. Modified author abstract
