Abstract:

CTR-73-20composite materials, carbon fibers, graphite, carbon, tapes, heat resistant plastics, pyrolysis, silicon carbides, acrylic resinspolyimide resins, graphitizing, fiber compositesAn investigation is conducted to develop high modulus fiber, tape and composites. Attempts to produce another alloyed carbon filament simi-lar to a B-C alloy fiber are unsuccessful, but a silicon carbide on a carbon substrate fiber is produced as a by- product. The effect of catalysts on the properties of a carbon tape is demonstrated with improved properties being attained when CaCl2 and B2O3 are employed. Carbon bodies are produced from polyimide sheet, binder and partially oxidized carbon yarn and from partially oxidized carbon yarn alone. The use of a solvent in the latter process to form a fibrillar carbon body results in improved bonding between the fiber. Author, modified-PL
