Structure of the West Florida Platform, Gulf of Mexico.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure of the Florida Escarpment and western Straits of Florida using continuous seismic reflection profiles and magnetic field measurements. Results are analyzed within the framework of deep-sea coring and dredging data, seismic refraction and gravity surveys, and information from deep wells on land. The study area lies in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, south of the transition from thick clastic sequences to platform carbonates in northern and central Florida. Lying just north of the Antillean island of Cuba, the region includes part of the boundary between the Gulf and Caribbean basins.
