Planning for the Use of Plasma Volume Expanders in Resuscitation Following Trauma,
Abstract:
Planning for the treatment of casualties following civilian disasters and military combat situations has included the provision of blood volume expanders. The types and quantities have to be estimated for the situation under consideration, and are based on both medical and logistical consideration. The following points must be considered The etiology of the wounds The time between injury and reaching a definitive care facility Proportions of seriously injured to less seriously injured patients reaching the hospital The availability of whole blood or of packed red cells Factors determining the selection of specific plasma volume expanders Current scientific information and practice. The purpose of the report is to provide current information to form a basis for updating these plans. Author
