Crisis in Jordan: 1970.
Abstract:
What prompted the September crisis which pitted Arab against Arab in the bloodiest civil war that Jordan has known. An examination of the key participants, including the King, the Kings Army, and the Palestinian guerillas in terms of recent history helps one to understand some of the problems which Hussein faced in 1970. Although the King was sympathetic to the guerilla cause, the use of Jordan as a training ground and base of operations caused many problems. When the guerillas challenged his authority directly in 1970, he had no choice except to fight. His victory may be short lived, because the large problem, the Arab-Israeli conflict, remains unsolved.
