The Field Ion Microscopy of Gold. I. Hydrogen Promoted Field Evaporation - Experimental Results,

Abstract:

A systematic study of the effect of hydrogen gas on the field evaporation characteristics of gold field ion microscope FIM specimens has been performed. The dependence of the field evaporation rate on hydrogen gas pressure, tip temperature, electric field strength, and time has been measured for the central axially symmetric 001 plane. There was no value of electric field strength at which FIM images of gold specimens were stable in the presence of hydrogen gas. Electron microscope observations of the hydrogen etched specimens indicated that the radius of curvature on the 001 region has a tendency to blunt, and that this tendency increased with increased hydrogen promoted field evaporation and temperature.
