Abstract:

The antenna is a characteristic part of a radar system and has much influence on radar design. The report describes the role played by the antenna from the viewpoint of the radar systems engineer. It is shown what effect the antenna gain and aperture have when the radar is limited by thermal noise, clutter, or jamming in situations when the radar is either searchlighting or scanning. In some applications, the gain is the chief factor of importance, in others it is the aperture or the gain-aperture product. In some cases the antennas is of no significant importance at all, other than there be one. The properties of antennas are reviewed, and their significance to radar application is discussed.
