Noise and Wear Characteristics of Water Lubricated Bearings and Material for Strut and Stern Tube Service,
Abstract:
A Naval station was authorized to conduct an investigation into noise producing characteristics of various elastomers used for stern tube and strut bearings on Naval vessels. The report presents, as a portion of this investigation, the results of an intensive study of natural rubber staves and Buna N staves of four different hardnesses. In addition, some preliminary information on GRS synthetic rubber, laminated phenolics, and lignum vitae is reported. Tests were conducted on a 14 in. diameter by 18 in. long bearing assembly, on a special 10 in. diameter single stave machine, and on a 6 in. diameter by 12 in. long half bearing assembly.
