Abstract:

ECOM-4045DA-1-T-061102-B-11-A1-T-061102-B-11-A-01thorium compounds, radiation hazards, image intensifierselectronics, thorium compounds, lenses, thorium compounds, glass, eye, radiation dosage, permissible dosage, protection, ophthalmologylight amplification, starlight scopesTests performed upon eyepieces of Starlight scopes revealed significant emission of nuclear radiation by radioactive thorium contained in the glass lenses. Quantitative measurements indicated that the dose which would be deposited within the human eye by some lenses can exceed maximum permissible levels. Methods to reduce the dose below these levels are suggested. Pertinent background material on radiation protection regulations, radioactive equilibrium, and ophthalmology is included for reference.
