Abstract:

The three-dimensional nature of the flow fields in planar nozzles and wall jets found in bistable fluid amplifiers was investigated. Detailed total pressure measurements were made at the exit plane of nozzles having convex wall curvature for cases with flow supplied perpendicular and parallel to the nozzle exit flow direction. Significant low total pressure regions in the corners of the nozzles caused by sidewall boundary layer cross-flow in the vicinity of the convex nozzle walls were found in both cases. Midplane total pressure loss regions were found in the parallel supply flow case only. They were produced by secondary flows generated at the transition from round to rectangular flow area at the nozzle inlet. Author
