Abstract:

Color-naming was delayed when the color patch wwas preceded by a 50 msec flash of a color name in black ink. This delay was highly reliable, but only about half that obtained with individual stimulus versions of the Stroop color-word test where the word and color are integrally combined. Intervals of 0, 25, 50, and 100 msec between the word and color did not change the amount of interference. The paradigm makes it possible to explore naming interference with visual dimensions that cannot be combined with words and, by manipulation of the interval between word and color, to study the duration of neural activity associated with words.
