A Single Crystal Serves as Turbine Blade,
Abstract:
A technique of growing single grains shaped as turbine blades has been developed at the All Union Scientific Research Institute of Aviation Materials VIAM. Both solid or hollow blades can be fabricated in this way. The VIAM technique makes possible a complete control of the nucleation and its crystallographic orientation. It just happened that all directions from 001 to 111 are optimum for the strength of turbine blades. Test of single grain specimens made of a nickel base alloy have proved the advantages of the new material. The time to fracture of single grain specimens at 1050C stresses to 14 kg per square mm was 100 hours against 16 hours for polycrystalline specimens. Author
